TESA, TESE, PESA and MESA

Men can suffer from infertility due to a lack of motile sperm being released in their ejaculate or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm such as a vasectomy. A sperm extraction procedure can be used to help improve fertility in these cases by extracting sperm directly from the testes. These procedures are known as TESA, TESE, PESA and MESA.

MESA is the gold standard procedure for obstructive azoospermia because of its excellent reported fertilization and pregnancy rates. However, MESA requires a surgical procedure to retrieve fluid from the epididymis and high-power microscope. This is not the case with PESA which is an inexpensive and safe method for sperm retrieval without a surgical procedure. The present study compares PESA and TESA to determine which one has better clinical pregnancy (CP) and live birth rate (LBR).
